Pera Melana is a traditional village in Southern Kynouria, a short distance from Tyros and Leonidio, and is part of the historical region of Tsakonia. The village retains strong elements of the Tsakonian identity to this day, as many of its residents still know and use the Tsakonian dialect, a feature that gives the settlement unique cultural significance. The local community also includes the smaller settlements of Livadi and Petra, forming a small but cohesive settlement complex with shared historical and social ties.
The Pera Melanon Folklore Museum, housed in the village’s old school, plays a particularly important role in preserving local memory and tradition. The items in its collection highlight the way of life of the Tsakonians in earlier times, their daily activities, the household economy, and the social practices of the community. The village is thus a place where traditional architecture, the Tsakonian language, and folkloric heritage coexist, keeping the connection between the present and the past alive.

Voula Paraskeva is a visual artist and a graduate of the Department of Painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts in Thessaloniki; she also studied film set design in Barcelona. She has worked in theater and film as a set and costume designer and has taught visual arts for 14 years. Her practice focuses on the relationship between light, space, and narrative, creating handmade objects and lighting fixtures that function as experiential interventions in space and everyday life.
