The contemporary art exhibition “Encounters” is conceived as an open gesture to the community and is presented as an independent section within the broader program of the Melitzazz Festival. It is structured as a network of encounters, where the place, the people, and their practices play an equal role in shaping the artistic act. Three artists engage with the place through the personal memories of locals and the archival documentation of the collective wealth of indigenous communities.

The relationship develops experientially, through shared time, gestures, work rhythms, words, and pauses. Each person’s practice becomes a space for observation and interaction. The resulting work functions as a trace of the encounter. It incorporates materials, narratives, and movements; it transcribes experiences into forms. Contemporary artistic practice intersects with locality as an experience in constant transformation. The work serves as a bridge between manual knowledge and symbolic thought, between the everyday and the poetic. Each work is accompanied by a video interview with a local resident. The video serves as a parallel narrative: voice, gaze, and personal story form a second level of interpretation, where lived experience takes on an independent presence within the exhibition space.

The presentation is a collaborative effort. Artists, their work, and local residents come together, transforming the space into a venue for dialogue. Creator, artwork, and audience coexist in a shared experiential context, where art is produced through relationships and exchanges.

In this context, the exhibition space in Leonidio emerges as a dynamic field of meaning. The site hosts multiple narratives, short stories, and hands-on practices, which take on open, contemporary interpretations through artistic co-creation.

The goal is to actively engage the local community and foster a deep understanding of the life, history, and heritage of the area.

The “Encounters” Contemporary Art Exhibition is being held with the support of the NEON Organization for Culture and Development.

The Melitzazz Festival aims to showcase and promote the rich cultural heritage of Tsakonia in a modern and creative way. History, tradition, architecture, the Tsakonian dialect, weaving, and Tsakonian dance intertwine with traditional and contemporary music, events, culinary experiences, workshops, seminars, and film screenings. Scattered events and street concert stages stretch through the alleys and squares of Leonidio. In the town’s architecturally distinctive mansions and tower houses, visitors can explore historical exhibitions and installations, contemporary art exhibitions, workshops, and film screenings.
